A dwarf form of the
Christmas Tree, although this one grows into a small mound.
Resin and
foliage have a typical balsam scent. Selected in 1866. Very slow
growing, just 2-4 inches per year. Can be planted in sun or shade and in well-drained
soil. Salt tolerant which makes it a good plant for street or sidewalk
plantings. Ideal for rock gardening, container gardening, bonsai culture, and Japanese
gardens. Propagated by rooted cuttings. It likes cooler climates of
the US, zones 3-7.
Mino Yatsubusa is a dwarf form of the
beautiful Trident Maple. This small shrub-like cultivar, with dense
branching and tightly spaced nodes may only grow cm. per year. The leaves
have a sharp pointed center lobe with smaller side lobes extending at nearly
right angles, giving the leaves an unusual T-shaped appearance. The summer
foliage is a rich, shiny green which turns to scarlet and orange. This rare
selection is excellent for specimen plantings and bonsai training. Content
in partial shade to full sun. Reaches 6-8’ in 15-20 years. Grafted on
Acer buergerianum seedlings. Zone 5-9.
Foliage in spring is intense reddish-pink and
glossy. Maxes out at around 6-8 feet. Does well in moderate shade to full sun. Grafted on
Acer palmatum seedlings. Zone 5-9.
Coonara Pygmy was selected by Arnold
Teese of Yamina Rare Plants in Victoria, Australia. This selection has a
small, rounded habit with very close node spacing, and a dense arrangement
of branches and foliage. It will mature around 6-8’ with a comparable
spread. The medium to dark green leaves turn pastel orange, yellow, and
various shades of pink in Autumn. Excellent choice for container gardening,
and bonsai training. Does well in moderate shade to full sun. Grafted on

Fjellheim Coral Bark Japanese Maple
This new Japanese maple from the late
Ilo Sorenson of Sydney, Australia is likely to become commonplace in
gardens around the world. It was discovered as a branch sport on Acer
palmatum ‘Sango kaku’. It is essentially a smaller, more compact form of
the popular ‘Sango kaku’ and ‘Beni kawa’ coral bark maples. It has bright
red stems and small green leaves. It is vigorous when young, but slows to
form a small 8-10’ tree or shrub. Fall color display is exceptional
with orange, red, and yellow. Full sun or partial shade. Grafted on

Kiyohime
Japanese Maple
A
true dwarf form of Japanese Maple, grows
less than 4 feet tall in about 10 years with dense branching and a bushy, rounded
habit. 'Kiyohime' shows a unique blend of color and form. Shiny
green leaves are tinged with red-orange in the spring progressing through

variety displays an extremely dwarf habit in the landscape; typically
growing only about 1"-3” per year. Very unusual form. Grafted on Acer

compact, multi-branching habit with short stubby branches and extremely
tight internodes. The dark green leaves are arranged along the branches in

unique, and interesting form. Grafted on Acer palmatum seedlings.

Sugar Maple
A narrowly upright, fastigiate
Sugar Maple with regular size leaves! Looks like a child trying on
adult clothing. This tree was discovered by Mr. Robert Cole as a
chance seedling growing in Pickaway County, Ohio. Although the parentage of
this new variety is unknown, it is believed to be a chance seedling of
Acer saccharum. The leaves in fall will turn yellow-orange to red
It has a dwarf to semi-dwarf growth rate (grows at 1/2 the rate of a typical
sugar maple) but will eventually reach a height of 25 feet with a spread of
10 feet. The plant patent documents state the trees were 17 feet tall
at 13 years old. Hardy to zone 4.

Acer saccharum ‘Powhattan'
Powhaten Sugar Maple
An introduction by Theodore Klein from a witches broom growth. "The
original plant is approximately 35' tall and 12' wide. The foliage is a deep
rich green in summer, changing to a bright yellow orange in fall. It is
strongly branched and holds up well to snow and ice loads."
'Powhaten' has a more upright habit of the two dwarf sugar maples we offer.
It's also very compact and can grow to 20 feet and more with age.

Native to China, this small shrub forms an upright spreading habit and
reaches a mature height of around 6-8’. The small lustrous, dark green
leaf has reddish margins. Small ½ inch white, mildly fragrant flowers,
appear in June-July and persist into October, giving the plant the
appearance of being covered in small white buttons. Very pleasing.
This plant is very adaptable to most planting sites, except those with
consistently wet soils. Good choice for summer flowering in
shady locations. Propagated from rooted stem cuttings. Zone 5-9.

Betula nigra ‘Little King’
Little King Dwarf River Birch
This dwarf selection of the popular River Birch was discovered and
introduced by Jim King of Oswego, Illinois. It forms a dense, compact,
rounded-oval habit with thick branching eventually reaching a mature height
of around 10 feet with a slightly smaller spread. The leaves are
similar in shape and size to the species, but with the darker green and
glossy foliage. Fall color is a bright yellow. This form
also displays the characteristic exfoliating bark peeling away to reveal
cinnamon-brown and salmon tones, which makes it a great choice for added
winter interest in any landscape. Provide moist, slightly acidic soil
in sun or very light shade. Excellent choice for specimen plantings,
wet sites, and winter interest landscape plantings where space is limited.
Rooted stem cuttings. Zone 4-10.
If you want something small with amazing flowers, this shrub is for you.
