Carpinus betulus 'Columnaris Nana'

Cephalotaxus harringtonia 'Fastigiata'

Columnar Japanese Plum Yew

An upright, but not uptight, deep green conifer for shade, 'Fastigiata' will grow very slowly to a final size of 8 feet, with a spread of 3-5 feet.  (to 5 feet tall in 10 years)  It is a columnar or vase-shaped shrub with long branches originating near the base and pointing straight up. The branches are held tightly together and the leaves are bent downward and arranged in spiral-radiating whorls, like bottlebrushes.  Very flourish-y effect!  It is known to have been cultivated in gardens since 1830.  So OK, maybe it's a little uptight.  Zones 6-9.  Rotund-columnar form.  Partial to full shade, requires well drained, sandy soil and cannot stand wet feet.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Kosteri' in landscape

Chameacyparis obtusa ‘Kosteri’

Kosteri Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress

My favorite dwarf hinoki, this variety may reach 5-6 feet after 30 years, like the ones at Duke Gardens in Durham, NC.  It grows very slowly, putting on an additional 2" of height each year.  Its cupped fans of foliage are extra dense and tightly stacked but the shape is informal, with the fans slightly twisted.  Do not confuse this beauty with the more open, faster growing west coast variety which is, unfortunately, now common.

Chameacyparis obtusa ‘Nana Gracilis’

Gracilis Dwarf Hinoki Falsecypress

Here's one of the most planted forms of dwarf hinoki cypress and rightly so!  It's easy to care for, has vivid green color, and maintains a nice compact form throughout its lifetime.  After many years, it may reach 6 feet in height by 3 feet in width, and after 50 years could reach 12 feet.  Young plants begin as a globose bun and then become more conical, growing broadly conical in shape as they mellow with age.  For sun or shade, zones 5-8.  You can't go wrong with this plant...always fashionable, always elegant.  Think Audrey Hepburn!
