Chase Manhattan Dwarf Maidenhair Tree

|
Ginkgo
biloba ‘Chase Manhattan’
Chase Manhattan Dwarf
Maidenhair Tree
Ginkgo biloba dates back in
fossil records farther than any other known living plant species, over 150
million years. It was once thought to be extinct until living specimens
were found in a remote region of China. Now it is planted around the world
as an ornamental and is also known to have medicinal qualities. This
particular cultivar is a slow growing, dwarf form of the species, which will
likely reach only 6-8 feet at maturity. The leaves resemble the species,
but are much smaller. The fall display is an outstanding bright yellow. The
species is widely adaptable to differing soil conditions and PH and is
remarkably resistant to pest damage and heat. Plant in full sun. Grafted on
Ginkgo biloba seedlings. Zone 4-9.

Ginkgo biloba 'W.B.'
Witches Broom Dwarf Ginkgo
This Ginkgo grows about twice as large as the Chase
Manhattan, but is also considered a dwarf form. It's leaves are also
slightly larger, lighter green, and cupped or curled as you can see from the
picture at right. It actually grows more as a shrub than a tree,
although it can be trained in a bonsai fashion. A 3-year old plant is
about 10 to 12 inches in diameter creating a nice dwarf globe with light
green leaves and butter yellow coloration in fall. Great for garden
railroads, rock gardens, or bonsai. Plant in full sun. Grafted on
Ginkgo biloba seedlings. Zone 4-9. |

Sky Pencil Japanese Holly
More unusual than small,
this Japanese Holly is so unique people usually don't know what to do with
it. Use it as an upright design element in your garden, put one on
either side of your front gate or any place you want to accent an entrance
or passage way. It grows extremely upright, with very tightly packed
branches, and dark green evergreen foliage. Blue fruit appears in the
fall. Although its hardy to zone 5, site this plant with protection
from winter winds in zone 5. Ideal for Japanese
gardens because of its unique shape. Plant in full sun or shade, it
grows 6-8 inches per year to around 8 feet tall with age.

Itea virginica ‘Shirley’s Compact’
Shirley’s Compact Dwarf
Virginia Sweetspire
This very unusual form was found as a chance seedling by
the late
Shirley Speight at the Biltmore House and Gardens, Asheville, North
Carolina. It is an extremely dwarf form of our native sweetspire with very
tiny, dark green leaves. The stems are upright and green, and like the
species is stoloniferous, and will spread, albeit slowly. Unlike some dwarf
plants, this one produces abundant white flowers in summer. Probably will
mature around 12-18”. Fall foliage is orange with some red and yellow tones.
Neat plant! One of our favorites. Propagated from rooted cuttings. Zone 5-9.
* Please keep the Speight family
in your prayers. Shirley passed away Oct 6, 2006 after a long battle
with cancer.

distributed genus' in the world. 'Berkshire' is a low flat-topped
cushion with blue needles and reddish stems. It is very slow growing
and reaches only 12" tall x 20" wide. It demands a full sun location

Juniperus communis 'Gold
Cone'
Gold Cone Common Juniper
As opposed to the wide spreading, open habit of this
species, this cultivar grows as an upright, narrow column with dense
foliage. In addition to the unusual shape, the new growth is bright yellow in
the spring and summer, turning to lime green in the winter. A great
accent plant! It's a rather new introduction, found in Germany around
1980. Grown in full sun, expect 3-6 inches of growth per year.
Hardy to zone 3. |
